INGLEWOOD —  Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa entered Sunday’s game with 41 career sacks, but none against Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

That changed when Bosa pinned Mahomes in the third quarter for a loss of 13 yards.

But Mahomes and the Chiefs got the best of Bosa and the Chargers after Harrison Butker made the game-winning field goal for a 23-20 overtime victory at SoFi Stadium.

Bosa was able to hit Mahomes multiple times, despite a left triceps injury. The Chargers’ defensive line forced Mahomes into many missed throws in the first half.

Mahomes, however, was able to adjust in the second half with quick throws and timely scramble runs, including a 21-yard run on 3rd-and-20 with 54 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

“We just have to do a better job of keeping (Mahomes) in the pocket,” Bosa said with his left arm heavily wrapped.

Bosa said he was forced to stay on the left side of the defensive line because of his injury. He strained his left triceps in last week’s win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“It was definitely a little tough out there, but I managed,” Bosa said. “I was able to stay on the left side a bit more. Didn’t strain it … it will be all right.”

Bosa and the Chargers’ defense displayed fatigue in the fourth quarter and overtime. The offense didn’t do them any favors when they went three-and-out in the opening drive of overtime.

Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said he considered going for it on 4th-and-1 from his own 34-yard line before calling the punt team. The Chiefs won the game on the following drive.

Bosa was disappointed with the outcome, but said it was a good sign they were able to hang with the Chiefs for most of the game with rookie quarterback Justin Hebert.

“I think he showed out today,” Bosa said about Herbert. “He did plenty of great things.”

EKELER, ALLEN GET INVOLVED

The Chargers failed to get their two top playmakers involved in the season opener, but that wasn’t the case for Week 2.

Running back Austin Ekeler and wide receiver Keenan Allen were big reasons why the Chargers had a 17-6 lead in the third quarter.

Ekeler recorded 148 total yards with a team-high 93 rushing yards (16 carries) and 55 receiving yards (four catches).

Allen was Herbert’s go-to target, with 10 targets for seven receptions and 96 yards.

But Ekeler and Allen were quiet in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Chargers moved the ball well with 479 yards compared to the Chiefs’ 414.

To Lynn, the difference was the lack of explosive plays from his offense. The Chiefs got one when Mahomes found Tyreek Hill for a 54-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Hill finished with five catches for 99 yards.

“At some point, we gotta create some explosive (plays),” Lynn said. “This team is just too dynamic to play ball control for four quarters. They’re gonna strike at some point.”

INJURIES

The Chargers started the game without quarterback Tyrod Taylor because he had difficulty breathing and were without right tackle Bryan Bulaga for most of the game because of a knee injury.

Second-year offensive lineman Trey Pipkins replaced Bulaga. The Chargers were also without center Mike Pouncey, who is scheduled for season-ending hip surgery later this month.

Defensive tackle Justin Jones (shoulder) and safety Rayshawn Jenkins (groin) also left the game with injuries. Lynn didn’t provide injury updates after the game.
